Say it - they might need to hear it!

Matt Ager

We've had a great start to the term in schools, with a busy team meeting earlier in the week confirming how much we've got lined up. There has always been that nagging feeling though, whispering in the wings, that suggests we've had our day or that what we say in schools is no longer making an impact. Obviously this isn't true and it's the enemy having a chew at our ankle; but, we're human beings which means we sometimes begin to believe what he says.

Cue a random teacher at one of the secondary schools this morning who happened to walk past a room I was settling into for a day's mentoring sessions. He popped his head round the door and shared that he has been studying poetry with his students and explaining how the ending of a poem is crucial to summing up the entire structure. After encouraging them to think of other situations in life where the 'summing up' has a positive impact, one student shared how our assemblies have the same effect on him; he always remembers the message which students are left with at the end of the assembly that sums up the entire structure, leaving him to ponder and be influenced by it for some days. "I just thought you'd want to hear that" said Mr. Teacher as he went on his way.

Today, if someone pops into your head and you have something to share with them that would be uplifting, however trivial, pick the phone up and deliver the message. ..it might just be a timely anaesthetic for their rather-chewed ankles!

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11
